NO NEW SNOW FOR 48 HOURS
MID MOUNTAIN BASE DEPTH 25" at LOBO
Good morning skiers and snowboarders, this is Mario with your SnoFax report for Friday November 29th, 2024.
No new snow to talk about for a couple of days, but we have been fortunate enough to see some new terrain. Powder Seeker and the Bowl opened up yesterday around 1pm. With the amount of snow that we have, I would not be surprised to see Liberty Bowl opened up very soon.
WIND AND TEMPS: Today's temperatures are going to be similar to the last couple of days, ranging from 12°F and 27°F with stronger winds shifting out of the Southwest at 15-20mph. All of this under mostly cloudy skies.
FORECAST UPDATE: The forecast is calling for sun for nearly a week, so it seems like what we see is what we've got for snow for the forecastable future. I wrote an article about long term forecasting in which the Old Farmer's Almanac predicted times of feast and famine when it come to snow this year. We'll have to wait and see how that all pans out, but it sure seems like we've had a powder feast for the last few weeks.
YESTERDAY'S SKIING: My wife and I managed to catch the Bowl right after it opened and the snow was deep and fairly heavy in there, and the coverage was excellent. Only a few dicy spots along the Turkey Traverse. It also looks like the South Face of Challenger Terrain was opened up, but given the tracks I spotted up there, I wasn't compelled to make my way up there. The groomers on Andesite are holding up well, but still seem to be a little wavier than usual.
NEW TERRAIN: Well given the fact that the resort's new snow reports are 3 sentences long at best, it seems that the general public will not even be granted a few hours notice on potential new terrain. The best we can hope for as public is an Instagram post after the fact. They say life is all about who you know and apparently that's how it works when it comes to skiing rope-drop terrain as well. However what I can tell you is that I have heard rumblings of Liberty Bowl in the near future.
OPENING WEEKEND: Opening Weekend seems to be one of the largest commuter weekends of the year, as the parking lot has been packed, while the skiing itself has not felt overcrowded at all. Due to the resort's new twin tips pass, it's a fun time of year to see lots of people who are normally skiing Bridger, or other Montanans driving in for a few days of Big Mountain skiing on our flashy lifts.
SnoFax Positivity: I have been very encouraged by friends and acquaintances that I have run into on the mountian and have expressed support for my new snow reporting endeavour. Though I have absolutely no idea if even anybody has been reading these first few reports, it's what I love to do and I hope to do this for the rest of my life. I hope to grow an online and literal community that loves to read, write, and share their experiences skiing in Big Sky, in order to equip more people with proper knowledge so that they can make the most of their days on the mountain by knowing what their getting into.
I will most likely be taking the day off, as the last couple of days skiing with my wife and carrying around our 13month+ old baby have been incredibly fun, and a tad exhausting.
As always, remember to stay safe, and have fun out there.
