NO NEW SNOW FOR 8 DAYS
MID MOUNTAIN BASE DEPTH AT LOBO 22.6"
Good morning skiers and snowboarders, this is Mario with your SnoFax report for Thursday, December 5th, 2024. Well, we have had string of beautiful warm sunny days where the sun has stayed very low in the sky. The skiing has been terrific for December in Big Sky. For reference, myself and others noted that my mother (who has screws and rods in one of her knees) was skiing faster than we have seen her ski in years, and down Ambush, a run that she typically despises. The Bowl continues to provide chalky smooth turns around small managable bumps. I myself have not skied the Tram yet, largely due to taking care of a one-year old, but thankfully SnoFax has that covered, which you can read about later in this update.
WIND AND TEMPS: Today is expected to be the warmest one yet, with temps ranging from 28°F to 43°F with mid mountain temps in the 30's. Winds are expected to be calm and out of the West, gusting to 25mph at the summit.
MORE MYSTERY INCHES: When I checked the resort website yesterday, I didn't think I saw any new snow being reported on their map, but lo and behold my mother pointed out to me a mystery inch at Liberty and Lookout Yesterday. And I am seeing even another mystery inch reported overnight at Lookout this morning. These seemingly insignificant inches can add up to a foot in a weeks time, especially when we are actually getting consistent snow, and these numbers aren't being monitored closely. This time with Lookout, the claim of "windloading" just simply cannot be made, as we can see the data ourselves, a video soon to come.
SnoFax = By the people, for the people of Big Sky
Take a look at this update provided by a SnoFax contributor. When I asked for help to figure out what was going on in Liberty Bowl the other day, Taylor and many others stepped up and shared their thoughts/images/videos.
I want to give a huge shoutout to Taylor and his report from Liberty Bowl the other day, after we had received a mystery inch. This kind of on the scene, unbiased reporting is going to be the backbone of SnoFax moving forward, and anyone who joins as a supporter can do so. SnoFax is not about "crapping" on the resort report, as those in charge of writing those reports have a job to keep it simple, and keep it positive. It is the automated algorithm that is falsely reporting accumulating snow that we are trying to counter, and even in that case we have no interest in shaming those responsible for attempting to program a system that I could never even begin to make. The reality is, SNOW IS WEIRD and it needs human eyes on it.
There's plenty of great skiing to be had out there, plenty of good things to say. But on any given day there are also plenty of dangers, risks, hidden obstacles, and things to warn your fellow skiers about. SnoFax is about sharing the whole story.
As always, remember to stay safe, and have fun out there.
