NO NEW SNOW SNOW FOR A FEW DAYS, CONTINUED WESTERLY WINDS
MID MOUNTAIN BASE DEPTH
LOBO 30.9"
LOOKOUT RIDGE 30.2"
Good morning skiers and snowboarders, this is Mario with your Big Sky SnoFax report for Saturday, December 21st, 2024. No new snow for a few days, but strong Westerly winds have kept much of the skiing fresh. Yesterday, midmountain temps tickled 40°at mid mountain, and they have slowly crawled back to that point through the night. Forecasting has never been a passion of mine, as yesterday was the only day this week expected to be above freezing, and now we are looking at similar temps today. Even some of the dreaded "r" word in the forecast at lower elevations if these temps don't drop, but I am doubtful that we will actually get wet, most likely just wet snow. Expect Northern aspects to be a little firm, and anything that may have gotten sun baked yesterday.
WIND AND TEMPS: Today's temps are expected to range between 29°F at the summit, and 39°F at the base, with mid mountain temps in the 30's. Southwest winds are expected to continue to blow, gusting to 45mph at the summit. All of this under mostly cloudy skies, with the possibility for some rain/snow after close.
These temps should make for wonderful, mild weather skiing but don't underestimate that wind. Things looked chalky off the Tram yesterday, and will likely be chalky in the Bowl as well. Most certainly some fun soft turns to be had on the North Side.
TRAVEL DAY OR SKI DAY?
For many, Saturday's are travel days, for others they are ski days. Regardless, Satuday's on holiday weekends mark the beginning of a surge of new and returning skiers. Buckle up as the most wonderful time of the year is the busiest for everybody actually working here. No bahumbuging, scrooging, or grinching, but let's all be thankful for the great snow, the awesome resort we get to work/play on, and the wonderful spirit of Christmas that is on of joy and mercy.
As always, remember to stay safe, and have fun out there.
