NO NEW SNOW FOR A FEW DAYS
MID MOUNTAIN BASE DEPTH 4'
No new snow to talk about for the past 3 days, and the sun has been shining. Temps hit as high as about 40°F yesterday at the mid to lower mountain, & have since dropped down to the mid 20's overnight. All day yesterday, it felt like the upper mountain was a giant green room, catching and absorbing the heat of the sun longer than any section of the mid to lower mountain that was down and in any sort of shade. Certainly sections of the South Face have thawed and frozen, and will need to thaw again this morning, but thankfully, that should happen quickly. North Facing slopes have remained chalky and soft, and honestly continue to be suprisingly great skiing. Things like Big and the SnowField have not been treated kindly by recent winds, and are very firm, especially up high. Overnight NW winds have likely only buffed out already chalky sections of our upper mountain, and have probably done minimal wind grooming.
WIND AND TEMPS: Today is expected to feel a lot like yesterday, maybe slightly warmer, with temps ranging between 24°F at the summit, and 38°F at the base, under bluebirdd skies with light swriling winds from the N/NE.
Well days like today really remind you how beautiful Big Sky is, and how essential it is to have good coverage in order to get around and chase the good snow. Not a bad day to take your time getting out, then head to some South Facing slopes for some soft morning turns before things get too squishy, then spend your afternoon either ripping groomers or hunting chalk in the shade.
More snow expected this weekend!
As always, remember to stay safe, and have fun out there.
