Just a trace of new snow. 85mph South winds yesterday! Sun and fun, warm temps, wind buffed skiing! Merry Christmas! Christ is born!
A couple of inches already this morning and it's not stopping any time soon!
CRUSTY Lower mountain! Wind buffed turns on Challenger. Lone Tree to open today (Supposedly). Temps more wintery but still warmish. Fun and sun!
No new snow today but the 15" of snow we've gotten in the last week has dramatically transformed the skiing. There's great powdery snow to be found in the Bowl, and fun wind buffed skiing to be had off of Challenger, and into the Headwaters. South Winds gusting to 75mph overnight likely continued to load up the The Bowl and the Headwaters, while scouring the South Faces of the peak and Challenger. Still no Lone Tree on the North Side, sounds like we just need more snow over there...
Today's temps are expected to be similar to yesterday, ranging between 23°F at the summit, and 37°F down at the base, with winds howling stronger than yesterday, gusting to 40mph at mid mountain. All under mostly cloudy skies.
Looks like we are going to get some more snow for Christmas! A few more days of warmer temps, ripping winds, and snow blowing in out of the Southwest before temps drop halfway through the weekend and we have a chance to top things off with a little Northwest storm action, then cold wintery temps and sun into next week. There sure are a lot of people out on the mountain but the skiing is nice and that Gondola sure helps keep people spread out! A Christmas cheer is in the air and the snow is not nearly as bad in Big Sky as it is in a lot of other places. As always remember to stay safe, and have fun out there.
24 hour snow total: 2.5"+
Yesterday raine prevailed at lower elevations until about 9am, at that point a white out level storm blew in a few more inches of snow, depositing more and more lighter and lighter powder the higher you went. Southwest winds continue to gust over 50mph, loading up aspects of challener with soft wind blown pow, while down at the base things were wet and sticky. Skiing on the North Side opened with a couple headwaters chutes, and a path down to the bottom of Madison 8, as well as skiing over on Southern Comfort. This morning down low once again temps are high and snow will be sticky.
Today's temps are expected to range between 25°F on the upper mountain, and 37°F at the base, and winds are expected to continue to blow steadily out of the Southwest. Clouds will prevail, high flying and not expected to deliver any snow!
Yesterday was the first day of the season that felt like real skiing off of Challenger. Let's hope we get more surprisingly sizeable deposits like yesterday morning's storm. It's Christmas Eve's Eve and the hordes are pouring in! Remember, we don't have much room to spread out yet!
3-5 Inches of snow in last 24 hrs, center mountain favored
Southwest winds gusting to 50mph overnight, and more snow throughout the day yesterday and we've got 3-5" in the last 24 hours, with the center of the mountain being most favored as this system settled in after cresting the peak. Our base at LOBO is now 3 feet deep! Still no skiing connectivity to Moonlight side of the mountain, but hopefully that changes soon. A few inches of snow, a few days in a row, and the skiing is undoubtedly improving bit by bit. Things keep up like this and before we know it we have some awesome skiing on our hands. For now, the lower mountain is struggling, that temperature line between upper/middle mountain and the bottom of our slopes has greatly been greatly thinned out by all these warm temps.
Today's temps are expected to range between 20°F at mid mountain, and 35°F at the base, and winds are expected to remain steady out of the Southwest, gusting to about 25mph at mid mountain, all under cloudy snowy skies with a little more snow expected this morning.
Temps into the mid 30's all week, with not much call for snow as this South Wind continues to push up only the leftovers of storms. Long range forecasts for this winter all carried the same caveat, and that was that weather would be heavily dependent on the behavior of the polar vortex, and up until this point, it seems that polar has not wanted to enter our vortex whatsoever this winter. Keep praying for snow and making the most of what we've gotten.
